Olin/2^2-6' We’re Number One For Safety, Recently, the Ecusta Paper and Film Group captured top place in safety among Olin’s six industrial divisions. President and Chief Executive Officer John M. Henske traveled to the Olin Works Plant in Covington and the Pisgah Forest Complex to make the announcement and present the President’s Award for safety accomplishment. “In 1979 every single group was outstanding in safety,” Henske said, “but you are the leader in the corporation and the best among many industries throughout the nation.” Henske not only praised manage ment and employees for safety, but for all-round excellent achievement in manufacturing, financial, personnel and manpower development areas. “1979,” he remarked, “was Ecusta Paper and Film Group s year in each respect.” In the area of Safety, the OSHA reportable rate for 1979 was 1.11,11.8 times less injury than the general industry safety average. Vice President of Human Resources and Public Affairs Bob Cunningham added, “Had we operated at the general industry safety average, 472 persons would have been OSHA reportable instead of 40. This type control is accomplishment. Without the teamwork of our management and hourly people, it would have been impossible to achieve this goal.” Henske presented the President’s Award to Vice President of Manufacturing John Candler who said, Employees take a few minutes to hear President John M. Henske praise Ecusta Paper and Film Group for leading the Cor poration in safety during the past year. Henske was at the plant site May 6. On May 7, he spoke to Covington personnel, applauding their efforts for safety. Our Group won the President’s Award in the area of safety. A cooperative effort between the company and union did not go unrecognized in the awards The Corporate Leader ceremony. At Pisgah Forest, Local #1971 United Paperworkers and the Union-Company Safety Committee members were honored with a decorative wooden plaque for contributions made toward successful safety. Accepting the plaque were union safety committee representa tives Bob Payne, Max McCracken and Ted Whitmire. At Covington, the Union also received a plaque for its contri ¬ butions. Accepting the plaque for Local #1470 ATCU AFL-CIO was Charles Ahrens. Employees, for their part in helping to achieve a tremendous safety record, have received an ice cooler. “When you carry the ice cooler, we hope you’ll carry with you the attitude of good safety practice,” Cunningham concluded. WHO AM I? Who Am I? I am old even though I’m very, very young. I am an exchanger of information. I am a vehicle of communication, ah ha ... of gossip ... of good gossip! I am an entertainer. I am inquisitive and positive. I am easy to understand. I am an educator, lam diplomatic. I am energy — printed — but I am really quite gentle natured. I am favorable toward you . . . biased about our Ecusta Paper and Film Group, if you wish. I aim to please although I know I can't please all of the people all of the time, but I’ll try. I am what you are, so be careful what you are. I am, can be a lot of things to you — but most of all . . . I AM YOURS . . . about you — to read and enjoy. It’s true, I've had a face lift, some voice lessons, I look a little different, sound a little different, but actually I was redesigned, recreated from the Olin News, our Group’s publication for many years which you will remember. Since I ve had my facelift, I am more energetic so I’ll be seeing you more frequently. My parent, the Olin News you will recall, was a quarterly publication. I am just born so I will be a two month publication for the next several issues — May-June, July-August, September-October, November-December. In January 1981, I hope to be strong enough to be on my feet once a month, a monthly publication ... for you! There is one little thing about me you should know. I am easily hurt by the people I seek to inform, entertain and impress; those people are YOU! I can handle criticism, but please give it gently. I do want you to accept me, like me . . . even grow to love me in time. I need your comments, positive and negative.ones. I am not unyielding even though sometimes it may appear that way. It's just that I am very sure of my purpose in life; I always remember it. Like one of nature’s most colorful creatures, the butterfly, I will develop even more in character and looks in time. But wait! Something s not right. Oh! I almost forgot. I haven’t introduced myself yet. Who and I? I AM YOURS, the Olin PROFILE. But the real pleasure is meeting you, getting to know you and seeing you and your activities, events, etc. on my pages each time I appear. The Olin PROFILE is who I am. And this issue marks my debut. A Note Of Thanks To Blood Donors, Blood Supporters Employees at Eucsta Paper & Film responded well to our Bloodmobile Drive May 27. We made the goal, 125 pints — we even exceeded it! 148 folks offered donation, collected was 127 pints. This was the finest six hour drive for the past three years, according to Red Cross records. And this performance almost doubled February’s drive which collected only 69 pints. A Memorial Day weekend, your blood was especially needed. A big THANKS goes to all employees who donated and who encouraged donation from their co-workers. Also, THANKS is in order for supervisory personnel who participated in the drive and encouraged donations from departmental personnel. It is a fact that without your efforts the drive would not have been successful. It was more than successful, and you did it! You can be a proud group! You not only helped achieve a goal, but even more important you will save the lives of those who would die without your blood! See you in August at our next drive. OK?
